Having just re-read this book, I was as intrigued and fascinated as the first (and second) time I had read it.

It is a detective story and a historical novel as well. The action all takes place in 19th century Istanbul and has a colourful cast of characters, Turkish and European, ranging from the Sultan and his mother to the master of the soup-makers guild. It has no illustrations, so a plan of Istanbul would help!
